Hall of Fame Educator

Legendary Syracuse Basketball Coach Jim Boeheim Trades the Hardwood for the Classroom as Professor of Practice at Falk College of Sport

Former Syracuse University men’s basketball coach Jim Boeheim, who spent 47 years leading his alma mater’s program, now has a new title at Syracuse University–Professor of Practice at the Falk College of Sport.

Boeheim, alongside David B. Falk Professor Emeritus Rick Burton, is teaching the Sport Management 300 class “From the Bench to the Boardroom: Lessons in Leadership.” A Professor of Practice is a faculty members with extensive industry experience rather than a background in academia, and Boeheim has nearly 60 years of experience at Syracuse as a student-athlete, national championship-winning coach, and now an educator.

The class provides a comprehensive overview of the leadership process, daily operations, and inner-working relationships found in every corporate or business setting. Students are studying leadership using professional and intercollegiate sport as a means to better understand the process of building team chemistry, discipline, and goal-setting. Prominent guests so far this semester have included another Hall of Fame basketball coach, Mike Krzyzewski, Southeastern Conference commissioner Greg Sankey, and Syracuse Special Advisor to the Chancellor and Athletic Director Heather Lyke.

Watch the video above to hear from Coach Boeheim about the new chapter in his career and from students about their impressions of “Professor Boeheim.”
